Oestrogen is a category of sex hormone responsible for the development and regulation of the female reproductive system and secondary sex characteristics. It’s produced in both male and female bodies, but at significantly lower levels in males.
There are three major endogenous estrogens that have estrogenic hormonal activity: estrone (E1), estradiol (E2), and estriol (E3). Another oestrogen called estetrol (E4) is produced only during pregnancy. Estradiol is the most potent and prevalent.
Oestrogen has protective effects on mood and mental health, bone strength, and even heart health.
Oestrogens are used as medications in menopausal hormone therapy, hormonal birth control.
